19 ‘Here comes that dreamer!’ they said to each other. 20 ‘Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.’…
23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe – the ornate robe he was wearing – 24 and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it. Gen 37:19-20,23-24
In Joseph’s dream, his brothers were bowing down to him but in reality they were throwing him into a pit. Now, our lesson today is that though God gives you dreams of things to come, it won’t always be smooth sailing. There will be times when others don’t understand or when they may even mock and persecute you. At these times, it’s absolutely crucial that we know that we have heard from God and to keep our faith and trust in him to see us through the trouble and to bring the promise to pass in his time. At this time do not doubt what God has promised.
Also, it is important to make sure you stay humble and do not give in to pride or arrogance. Do not say “these people do not hear from God. If only they heard what I heard or saw what I saw”. God will reveal things to those he chooses to reveal them to. Our job is to listen, obey and persevere through the trials.
Let us also learn this from Jesus who always passed the test…“for the joy set before him”. The Bible tells us the following in Heb 12:
…And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy that was set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
