The dream

5 Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. 6 He said to them, ‘Listen to this dream I had: 7 we were binding sheaves of corn out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered round mine and bowed down to it.’ 8 His brothers said to him, ‘Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?’ And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said. 9 Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. ‘Listen,’ he said, ‘I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.’ 10 When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, ‘What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?’ 11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind. Gen 37:5-11

I very recently had a dream and when I woke up I had a sense that God was in it and so I did what I could to action what I felt I should. This happens to me fairly rarely (once ever few years) but there are other ways that I know God speaks to me regularly. First question for you today is “How does God speak to you?” Down which channel do you most receive the heavenly download? While you read the Bible? In solitude? Via dreams and visions? While you pray? Now, all these channels and others are important for all of us to cultivate and grow in but in our relationship with God, we need to ensure that we learn to listen and be sensitive to his voice.

Second question for you is “What has God said to you?” What dreams are you carrying? What has God promised you? This is important because as you will see as we look at the story of Joseph this week, these are the things that will keep you going when the going gets tough. You will see that these are the things that the enemy (the devil & demons) will come against with force and unless you guard God’s word to you close to your heart, you could become very discouraged and disillusioned.

Remind yourself today of God’s eternal promises found in his word as well as his specific promises for your life and ask him to make his word burn in your heart everyday. Write down those promises. Put them somewhere you will see them regularly to fuel prayer and faith. God is good!
