1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
2 He said to them, “When you pray, say:
“‘Father,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come.
3 Give us each day our daily bread.
4 Forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.
And lead us not into temptation.’”
Luke 11:1-4
Jesus was such a fine example for us. One of the examples he set was how to follow an example. In John 5:19, he said “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.” The disciples caught on to how an example is followed when they asked Jesus to teach them to pray. Jesus then taught them by giving them the blueprint of the Lord’s prayer. The disciples had also had the privilege of watching him everyday as he modeled a lifestyle of prayer.
Let us not slip into an attitude of “I can do this on my own” or “I know how to pray”. Let us always come to Jesus and ask him to teach us and show us how to pray. Learn from his example and follow it! Like he said of the Father, let us say of him, “I can do only what he sees Jesus doing, because whatever Jesus does the I also do”.
