1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. Genesis 1:1
There are two places in the Bible where I am undone by four words. The first one is here – the first four words of the Bible. The second one is when Mark succinctly says, “and they crucified him”. The first four words of the Bible set the scene very well and that fourth word, ‘God’, is the only word that really fits in that setting and after the words, ‘In the beginning’. Your name doesn’t fit there and neither does mine. Listen to how the Psalmist puts it in Psalms 90:2. “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” Yes! This is our God!
In Gen 1:3, we see that powerful, creative union between God and his Word. He speaks into the darkness and asks for light, and light is what he gets. God’s Word is powerful to create. At that time there was no light and no life, and God speaks them into being. Jesus was right there. Creating. In the beginning.
And where were we? Where do we fit in? Well, let me show you something really cool – we were on his mind. Check out Ephesians 1:4-5.
“For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will…” Did you see that? Before those glorious events of creation, God had chosen you to be adopted into his family and be his child. That is humbling and something to thank God for right now. Take time to do so. God is good!
