Alongside and within

But the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will cause you to recall (will remind you of, bring to your remembrance) everything I have told you. John 14:26 (Amplified).

I don’t normally quote from the Amplified (because in some cases, the extra words added can be added alternatives, not really close to the original), but today I have in order to show that the word we translated “Helper” last time is jam-packed with meaning and significance. The actual Greek word used is parakletos, which means one called to be alongside us. He stands with us and walks with us through life. He is the same Holy Spirit who is sent to indwell us and live in our hearts. Each of the words the Amplified puts in brackets are words that different translators have used in translation of parakletos and each is accurate in showing a role that the Holy Spirit plays in our lives.

I like the translation to “Counsellor” because it ties in with the rest of the verse which says that one of his roles is to “teach us all things” or to “lead us into all truth”. Daily we need to be taught the truth about God. This comes as we read the Bible and other Christian literature, as we pray and trust for revelation and as we share our lives with dear brothers and sisters in Christ. Through the experiences of life, the Holy Spirit is working in our hearts to reveal the heart of the Father to us and to teach us the things we need to know.

His help is so multi-faceted and diverse. Open your heart to him and ask him whenever you need clarity or direction. He is there to guide you.
