While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ Acts 13:2
Some, like the Jehovah’s Witnesses will teach that the Holy Spirit is nothing more than a force. The Bible shows us clearly that the Holy Spirit is a person. This completely changes the way we approach him. We move from sitting back and watching as we expect this force to do things to actually engaging with him, listening to what he has to say and obeying his voice, allowing him to guide us. We move from spectator/consumer mode to relationship mode. Here are a few verses that teach us about the Person of the Holy Spirit:
1. In Acts 13:2 as we read above, the Holy Spirit speaks. Many times in the Bible we read of him speaking to people.
2. In 1 Cor 12:11 we read that he has a will and he dishes out gifts as he wills.
3. Romans 15:30 shows us that he loves.
4. In Acts 5:3 we learn that he can be lied to. Obviously we are warned against that.
5. In Ephesians 4:30, the warning is against grieving him, something we need to be careful of.
6. Our final warning is found in Heb 10:29 where we are warned against insulting the Spirit of grace.
Let us engage with the Holy Spirit today. Let us listen to his words and his promptings. Let us treat him as we would a person, except with multiplied awe because this Person is God!
