See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! 1 John 3:1

The fact that God is our Father and we are his sons and daughters is massive and significant. The Apostle John marvels at this great love that the Father has lavished on us. The terminology and relationships that God uses in the Bible are always packed with significance and meaning. There is a reason that God chooses these relationships. The fact that he is our Father is all over the Bible and forms such a crucial foundational relationship for us. John here zeroes in on the fact that it is an expression of love, great love. I love the story of the prodigal son because it shows us a picture of what has happened with us. We chose to live our lives our own way, in sin – far away from God. But God takes us in, feeds us, clothes us and gives us an inheritance that we don’t deserve.

Another terminology used is that of adoption. Where we deserved to be out in the streets because we chose the life that is repulsive to God, a life of sin – lying, cheating, pride, sex outside of marriage, words that discourage and destroy others, among other things. God takes us in and adopts us as his children and loves us with an eternal and powerful love. It is such great love that loves a people undeserving and makes them the children of God set to inherit the heavenly riches and kingdom. Today, let us thank and worship God for being our Father and for making us his children. Today, run to him and allow his love to envelop you.
