²² “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. ²³ “ Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. ²⁴ Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24

Voltaire said, “Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd”. I had to think for a minute if I agree with him. For a second I was thinking, “yeah, I think he’s right because certainty can lead to disappointment if what you were certain about does not come to pass”. But having thought a little more, you’re wrong Mr Voltaire, because faith is being certain of what we do not see.

Here’s where we come unstuck. We very easily use these verses to “name and claim” the latest Mercedes Benz or the biggest house in town and anything else that shows we are prosperous in God without taking time to know that we are praying in God’s will and cultivating the faithfulness and humility that comes with fruitfulness. That’s not faith, that’s what we have chosen as a glamorously deceiving substitute.

Doubt is a killer and Jesus was always quick to confront it in His disciples. But a faith that is rooted deeply in God’s word and will and a close relationship with him leads to growth and answered prayer. Believe and do not doubt! Be certain in who God is and in what he can and will do!
