…what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, “I am God’s Son”? John 10:36

Here Jesus uses the phrase, “I am God’s Son” as part of a sentence where he is asking his Jewish listeners why they accuse him of blasphemy. We don’t actually have anywhere in Scripture where Jesus boldly declares “I am God’s Son”, but we know he is because he is always talking about his Father (glance back a few verses and you will see several references to his Father), because his Father declared “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased” (Luke 3:22), and because he simply behaved like God’s Son.

The Good News for us is that one of the benefits of being in Christ is that we also become the sons of God. The Bible will refer to us as sons not so much to signify gender but to signify our inheritance in God. Knowing that we are the sons of God is such a critical truth that the Holy Spirit takes His time to whisper it into our spirits so that we can truly lay hold of it (Rom 8:16) and the apostle John marvels at this in 1 John 3:1 where he says “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”

Today, thank God for being your Father and for giving you the right to become his child. Thank him as you list any benefits you can think of that come with being his child.
