Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. Heb 4:14

Some years ago, I did not have a car and had knocked off from work and asked my wife to meet me at my stop as I would be using public transport. We misunderstood each other as to which stop exactly and she waited at one place while I dropped off elsewhere. With a considerable amount of money in my pocket and in the pitch darkness, I walked home and clutched my pocket for fear of being mugged.

Normally we hold on to something because of fear. In Heb 4:14 we are exhorted to hold firmly to our faith but not out of fear. We are to do so from a place of confidence. We are not driven by fear to having a strong faith but we are motivated by the fact that in Jesus we have a great high priest. His motivation directs us to hold on out of a clear conviction of his wonderful being and work. The backing he gives us helps us to be strong and to keep going.

We get another motivation in Heb 10:23 – “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” Again we don’t hang in there because we simply hope that perhaps some day things will be better. No! That’s weak. Here’s a strong reason to hold on: he who promised is faithful! Amen! Our God has proclaimed promises over us and what he promises, he is faithful to fulfil. Didn’t he promise to be with us until the very end of the age? Didn’t he promise that through the sacrifice of his Son, our sins would be forgiven and that he would keep us until the end? Hasn’t he given you promises about your own life?

He is good. He is faithful. He has given us Jesus as our high priest. He has given us all things good. And so we hold on. Firmly! Unswervingly!
