5 The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6 The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. Gen 6:5-6
This was a sad day in the history of mankind. God had taken time and care in forming man and breathing his life into him. After he had made male and female, he looked at them and marvelled, “This is very good”. Everything else had been called good, but suddenly something that was very good. He had placed them in charge of his creation and found pleasure in walking with them in the cool of the day. They were the apple of his eye, the prized among his creation.
We know what happened when the evil one tempted them and they gave in to this temptation. Not too long after that, we read in Genesis 6 a summary of what the world had become. The wickedness of the human race had become great and it says that “every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time”. Things were so bad that God decided to destroy everybody (save for 1 family) and start over. After the flood, he promised not to destroy the world in that way again. Instead, his plan for salvation was in motion and Jesus was lined up to invade earth.
Today, you look at the world and think, “were it not for the grace of God and Him being so patient and long-suffering as well as his covenant not to destroy the world, surely fire and brimstone would have hailed on this cruel world.” I am reminded of a song by Keith Lancaster which I used to listen to all the time.
“Everybody needs Jesus / Everybody in the whole wide world / Everybody needs Jesus / Everybody has a right to know
Red China has a right to know / They’re needing Jesus down in Mexico / San Juan, Puerto Rico / Zimbabwe and the Ivory Coast
Prince Charles has a right to know / Moammar and Fidel Castro / Starving people in Nigeria / The rich and famous out in Hollywood”
Today let us pray for all our leaders. Presidents, Kings & Queens, Governments, Mayors, Pastors, Headmasters & Headmistresses, Prefects, Dads & Moms. Let us pray that they may lead in a way that introduces Jesus to people. Let us pray that this Christmas would be one where the love and goodness of God would prevail.
