Glimpses of Majesty

Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. Psalms 8:1

Over the next few days we will be finding strength and inspiration in the Psalms. This book is rich with promises, praise, prayer and prophecy among other things. Let us find words from the Psalms to pray and to help us focus on God. Let us find songs to sing as we give praise to him and express our wholehearted devotion to him.

We begin today in Psalm 8. We start with a declaration of Who God is and how great he is. We start with the transcendent, the “otherness” of God, that which is not human but outside of our understanding. It is so important to regularly (daily if possible, multiple times a day would be even better) focus on characteristics of God, those attributes that cause you to fall on your knees and declare praise and adoration to him.

He is majestic! One of God’s names found in the Bible is Elohim. Reading up on its meaning is more than fascinating. You run into “It is a plural of majesty, honour and fullness!” Holman says “It is a revelation of the infinite nature of God”. You also find, “This name suggests that there is a mystery to the Creator-God which humankind cannot fully fathom. God is absolute, infinite Lord over creation and history”.

Yes, let’s start right here. Let us declare praise to God. Let us become aware of and overwhelmed by his nature. Let us fuel our thoughts with words that speak of God’s greatness and let our actions reflect that we fear him. Let us be in awe of Jehovah Elohim, our Creator God!
