No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. 1 Cor 10:13
We’ve looked at the enemy and how he tempts us. It is important to be aware of his schemes so that we can look out for them, but it’s even better to look at Jesus because he is the Ultimate Victor and the one who gives us victory. We’ve looked at his personal example – that should give us courage and put wind in our sails. In this context, today we come to this wonderful 3-part promise for us when we are tempted.
This promise helps us to not be discouraged because what we face is common to man. Remember also that Jesus was tempted in all 3 areas that we are (refer to yesterday’s devotional) and so he too is able to sympathise with you. Everybody that you know is also tempted in those 3 areas and actually you will find the very thing you face, many others face. So we can be encouraged to know that we are not alone.
This promise also helps us not be overwhelmed because he will not allow us to be tempted more than we can bear. So don’t let it weigh down on you. Take courage and keep going.
Finally this promise helps us to not be trapped in situations because God always provides a way out. Remember Joseph – working as a slave in a foreign land, he was very young, working for a powerful man in Government and Defense forces, seduced by his wife. The only way out would be to go to prison and what does he do? He leaves his cloak in her hands and runs for his life and yip, ends up in prison. Now you too – whatever it is that you are facing, God has provided a way out. So there’s only one thing for you to do – GET OUT OF THERE! NOW!
