Dealing with anxiety

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Phil 4:7

I ran into an article online titled ‘tips to manage anxiety and stress’. There were some very good points there, 15 in total. Limit alcohol and caffeine. Count to 10 slowly. Take deep breaths. Do your best. Not bad points and I’m sure they are helpful. There are so many solutions out there for the issues we face daily, but a lot of them deal with superficial issues and don’t deal with the heart.

Perhaps that is why Christianity is so attractive to some and yet so distasteful to others. When you realise that the problem with man is what’s inside, you appreciate Christianity because it has a solution. When you think that you can handle it, you brush Jesus to the side.

The solution God gives us for our anxiety is one that swops it out for very deep and powerful peace. It’s a peace that goes beyond human understanding and so we may sometimes struggle to explain it. It’s a peace that barricades our hearts and minds to keep them safe from further anxiety. This peace is found only in Christ Jesus.

And so with this in mind, if you are worried, stop and come to God. Be open, vulnerable and truthful with Him. Give him your requests and prayers and thank him for his peace. Ask him to wrap your heart and mind with it. Ask him to fill you with His Holy Spirit. Remember the fruit of the Holy Spirit in Galatians 5:22. One of them is peace. It is available for those who believe. Ask. Believe. Receive. And do not worry.
