Open mind

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’ Isaiah 6:8

This verse is extracted from the story of Isaiah who saw a vision of the Lord in his glory; the train of his robe filled the temple, angels were flying all around him calling out “Holy! Holy! Holy!” The doorposts and foundations shook and the temple was filled with smoke. In short, Isaiah encountered God. When God spoke to him and simply asked a question: “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” Isaiah’s response was simple. He put his hand up. Whatever the task was, he was good to go.

This was different to Moses’s response. With Moses, God spoke more directly without necessarily asking him a question. He told him clearly what he was to do, but Moses had a come back each time. He initially resisted God’s calling on his life. You can read the account in Exodus chapter 3. Gideon and Jonah were the same – they had excuses.

Often we are the same. When God leads us, we know better and we resist his calling on us at that time. When we come to God in faith, we come to him with an open mind and realise that the power is with him to lead us in any way he would like. We need to be ready. We will encounter God in many ways, some dramatic like in the case of Isaiah and Moses, some not as dramatic, hopefully on a daily basis and whenever we do, let the attitude of our hearts be as the response of Isaiah: “Here am I. Send me!”
