They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Acts 2:42

The second thing that the new believers devoted themselves to was to fellowship. Now, you might have heard the saying that “where use is unknown, abuse is inevitable”. I think this also counts for where meaning is unknown. For me, this would be the case with the word fellowship. As Christians, we have watered down its meaning to mean having coffee and doughnuts. But the Biblical meaning is very deep and powerful. It’s one word which carries many meanings all at once, including togetherness (i.e. a body of people – being together), unity (common cause and oneness of heart – believing together), action (doing together) effecting God’s will (obeying and serving God together). I’m sure you will agree that’s a lot deeper than drinking coffee and eating cake together.

Question is: is this something you are devoted to? If not, what needs to happen in order for you to be able to truly say “like the early church, I am devoted to fellowship”? Pray for the level of fellowship in your church and also pray that God will grow your devotion to it and help you be one who effectively puts it to practice where God has placed you. It’s for a reason and for such a time as this.
