¹ Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
² but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
³ That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither –
whatever they do prospers.
Psalm 1:1-3

The book of Psalms starts with a bang. No “small” talk but straight into you’re blessed if you don’t do this. Note the progression in verse 1. First you’re walking with the wrong crowd. When you notice that it’s best and easiest to slip away and let them keep walking. Because soon they will stop and you will all be standing, making it harder to get away and soon after that everyone’s sitting making it harder still. 1 Cor 15:33 warns us, “Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character”. You might think you are strong, but this applies to all of us.

The alternative is good company with the law of the Lord and meditating on it. To meditate on God’s word is to ponder over it and to turn it over again and again in our minds and our hearts. This changes us. And the Bible only gives us 2 times that we are to meditate on God’s word – day and night.

The result of doing this is found in verse 3. This is how we are blessed. Our lives flourish like a tree that has water. It bears fruit when it’s meant to and it stays green and healthy. I want a life like that. I would like to be consistently bearing fruit in my life. I would like my inner man and my character to be always showing that green leaf that never withers. I would like to be strong in the way I display and reflect the nature of God in everything I do. I would like to be truly blessed! And I’m sure you do too. Well, we’ve got the formula right here; we’ve seen what not to do and what to do. This is the way to blessings, so let’s take it and do what God says.
