Praise the Lord!

1 Praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord, you his servants;
praise the name of the Lord.
2 Let the name of the Lord be praised,
both now and for evermore.
3 From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets,
the name of the Lord is to be praised.
Psalms 113:1-3

I find that it is important to define such terms as praise or worship in order to gain a rich understanding and experience our great God. Holman Bible Dictionary says this of praise:

Praise comes from a Latin word meaning “value” or “price.” Thus, to give praise to God is to proclaim His merit or worth. Many terms are used to express this in the Bible, including “glory,” “blessing,” “thanksgiving,” and “hallelujah,” the last named being a transliteration of the Hebrew for “Praise the Lord.”

Praise can also be seen as an expression of admiration, approval, respect or gratitude. When we praise God we proclaim and express his worthiness and his works – Who he is and what he has done. Simply put when we praise him, we declare with words and actions: “Well done God!”

With out words we can say things like:
“Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.” Psalms 8:1
In our actions, we can clap our hands, lift our hands, dance, play instruments and sing songs, but more on that tomorrow.

For today, take time to praise God and dwell on his worthiness and works. Thank him for who he is and for things he has done both on a cosmic scale as well as in your life. Praise, thanksgiving, celebration; these all go hand-in-hand. Enjoy!
